About Us
Sr. Carmelina’s Preschool Academy opened in October 2010 and is managed by the Passionist Sisters. The Passionist Sisters operate schools and child care centres in 23 countries worldwide focusing on the education of children. All of our Teachers, some of whom are Sisters are registered with the College of Early Childhood Education and some also hold Montessori certification.
Our academy uses Ontario’s Pedagogy for the Early Years; How Does Learning Happen? (HDLH) (Ontario Ministry of Education, 2014) as a resource guideline to strengthen the quality of our programs and ensure high quality and enriching experiences that lead to positive outcomes in relation to the children’s learning, development, health and safety, nutrition and well-being.
Goals and Objectives
Grow cognitively free from pressure by providing academically appropriate educational activities.
Become physically well-coordinated and fit by giving importance to healthy habits, exercise and nutrition.
Become socially functional by building positive relationships with families, peers and teachers. Through group activities, they learn respect, cooperation, sharing, and caring for others and their belongings.
Develop and grow spiritually by providing a Catholic environment where Bible stories, songs and catechesis are an essential part of our program. We have prayers before meals, and our daily program is enriched with Christian principles and values.
Become emotionally healthy by enhancing their self-esteem and by offering them opportunities to experience success. Children are encouraged to express their emotions freely and appropriately in order to gain respect for the feelings and emotions of others.
Meals
We believe that eating healthy is important. This is why we use fresh ingredients prepared in our own commercial kitchen. Our menu is seasonal and is customized using a 4-week rotating cycle that offers a wide range of morning snacks, hot lunches and afternoon snacks. We provide great tasting meals and snacks, and allow children to make their own individual food choices.
Fresh food is prepared daily by our in-house cook who is Food Handler Certified. Our menu is adaptable to meet the individual needs of children with anaphylactic allergies and/or dietary restrictions. We have designed our menu to ensure that children are receiving the recommended servings of fruit, vegetables, meats, dairy and grain products as outlined in Canada’s Food Guide and complies with York Region Public Health guidelines.
Our Teaching Staff
Our Registered Early Childhood Educators (RECEs) collaborate closely with colleagues to construct meaningful learning experiences. Applying their expertise in child development and learning theories, our RECEs design and implement engrossing, child-centered, inquiry and play-based activities that inspire curiosity and advance growth. This dedicated team-based approach and supportive environment allows teachers the flexibility to engage in one-on-one learning opportunities with the children.
Safety & Security
Sr. Carmelina’s Preschool Academy takes safety and security very seriously. All of our employees have current immunizations, standard first aid and CPR certifications, and police reference checks. Our building is accessible only through the controlled use of security fobs, issued only to staff to ensure restricted access to the building and monitored by security cameras throughout. The access is critical to ensuring the safety of your children. We conduct monthly fire drills to ensure that staff and children are prepared for potential emergency situations.
Our preschool is open to all parents at any time. If you are a new parent you can arrange a tour of the preschool by calling the office at 905.552.1431. If you are an existing parent, we ask that you call the office to schedule a meeting or let the teacher know using the “Remind App” in advance if you want to come for a visit so that they are able to free themselves up for your visit and ensure that the “child to teacher ratios” required by the Ministry of Education are being maintained.
